Allahabad Fort

Allahabad Fort was built by emperor Akbar in 1583 AD. The fort stands on the banks of the river Yamuna near the confluence site. Its distance from Civil Lines is about 8 kms. In its prime, the fort was unrivalled for its design, construction and craftsmanship. At present the fort is used by the Army and only a limited area is open to visitors.

Allahabad Sangam

The sacred Sangam is the confluence of three of the holiest rivers in Hindu mythology - Ganga , Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. It is believed that it is at the Sangam that a few drops of the nectar 'Amrit" spilled making its waters truly magical. It is around 7 Kms. from civil lines overlooked by the eastern ramparts of the Allahabad fort, wide flood plains and muddy banks protrude towards the sacred Sangam.

Anand Bhavan

Anand Bhavan is a large mansion located in Allahabad, India. Established by Indian political leader Motilal Nehru in the 19th century, it has served as the ancestral home of the Nehru-Gandhi Family — future Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi was born there. The First Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru was however not born in Anand Bhawan. It was donated to the Indian government in 1970 by Indira Gandhi. Today it has been converted into a memorial and museum. Here one is offered a glimpse of the lifestyle of the family that retained for a long time and even today the status of the most important political dynasty in India. It is a two storied building which has rooms including the one where Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi used to stay during his visits.

Allahabad Museum

Allahabad Museum, Allahabad is proud of and boasts of a huge collection of displays that are scattered across a whopping 18 galleries. The beautiful items that are on display include prehistoric and Indus Valley antiquities, textiles, terracotta, stone sculpture, weapons, bronzes, seals, miniature paintings, Buddhist thanks, medieval land grants and much more. The museum also displays the documents and the personal effects of Nehru and the freedom movement. The other picturesque objects that are exhibited in the Allahabad Museum, Uttar Pradesh include beautiful stone images, lintels and intricately carved temple pillars dating from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD. These objects represent and portray important dynasties, both ancient and medieval. The museum also displays antiques from nearly all the well known and renowned schools of sculptures which include Mathura, Gandhara, Sarnath and Kausambi.

Jawahar Planetarium

Established in 1931, Allahabad Museum is housed within Chandra Shekhar Azad Park, on the Kamala Nehru Road, in Allahabad. The items on display include stone sculptures, terracotta figurines from Kausambi, Rajasthani Miniatures and coins and beads of Gupta period. The sculptures date back to 2nd century. Also seen are rare manuscripts of medieval age. The unique displays are the paintings by Nicholas Roerich and artifacts donated by the Nehru family.

How to Reach Allahabad

  • By Air :

    There is no air link to Allahabad presently. The nearest Airport is at Varanasi that is 150 kilometers from Allahabad. Varanasi being another important pilgrimage is well connected to the rest of India by daily flights. Both private as well as public carriers operate these flights.

  • By Rail :

    Allahabad is well connected by trains with all major cities, viz. Calcutta, Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow and Mumbai. The main station in Allahabad is Allahabad Junction. Several expresses as well as super fast trains ply to and from Allahabad.

    Allahabad, on National Highways 2 and 27, is connected to all parts of the country by good roads.
